Sailing Boat is not only the most personal song I've released, it's also my first love song. For a folk singer-songwriter who usually writes about the world around me and likes to tell other people's stories, it felt unusually vulnerable to share this song. I wrote it in the depths of lockdown, while I was stuck in a different country from my partner Tristano (incidentally also my co-producer) and was longing to be able to travel back to him.
It's my hope that anyone who has been apart from someone they love can relate to this song, and will find it simultaneously melancholy and sweet. I certainly found it comforting to write while I was feeling alone.
We started it off with simple production - guitar and some light shimmery piano - but you'll also hear the sound of waves weaving through the song, as it builds towards the chorus. I added some orchestral elements too - you can pick out the wistful sound of a horn, and a rich string quartet in the chorus. I hope you'll enjoy listening, thank you for stopping by. ⛵
